Jesus is the peace-bringer:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27

Peace, shalom (shah–loam). Shalom comes from the root verb shalam, meaning “to be complete, perfect, and full.” Thus shalom is much more than the absence of war and conflict; it is the wholeness that the entire human race seeks. The word shalom occurs about 250 times in the Old Testament.

USES OF SHALOM (PEACE)

In Psalm 35:27, God takes delight in the shalom (the wholeness, the total well–being) of His servant. In Isaiah 53:5, the suffering, beaten Messiah brought us shalom. The angels understood that Jesus was to be the great peace–bringer. They cried: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased” (Luke 2:14–17).

The saving power of His death and resurrection makes it possible for us to have peace with God. Jesus made us right with God (Romans 5:1). But also, the indwelling of His life and character through the Holy Spirit helps us learn to abide in the peace of God.

Jesus said to His disciples, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart” (John 14:27). Surrender to His will and submission to His Word will bring inner rest, as we allow the peace of God to “rule” in our hearts (Colossians 3:15), that is to let God’s peace act as umpire

1) over decisions that would trouble you,

2) overruling doubts that would disturb you, and

3) overthrowing the Adversary’s lies that would defeat or deter you. Perfect peace is available when the heart and mind keep focused on God’s promise, power, and presence. Trust Him.

APPLICATION

What troubles and doubts might you need to surrender to Jesus, the peace-bringer, today?

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  1. John 14:27 – The “gift” was not peace of mind, it was the Holy Spirit sent by the Father as Jesus was returning to his Father and would no longer be present with them (see verses 25 & 26)

Col. 3:15 – Believers do not surrender themselves to God as God the Father chose those who would believe in eternity (Ephesians 1:4). Romans 3:11 says, There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. Natural man is dead in sin (ephesians 2:1-2); therefore, chosen sinners must be called by the Father as it states in John 6:44, 6:65 and 6:37.

With respect Don are you a Calvinist in thought and in practice?

      • Jaime Rodrigues

You are right Barrie. God predestined each and everyone of us, all mankind to come to know His Son, Jesus. Even though He predestined us it is up to each individual person to come to Him for salvation through Jesus. God is no respect or of persons, ALL who call on His name “shall” be saved. Praise His wonderful name!

        • Again with respect Jamie – Romans 3:11 says, There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. The power to believe is in the word, not within man or woman. 1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 1 Thessalonians 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

      • Sorry Barrie, also with respect – I am not a Calvinist as John Calvin taught that God chose some to be saved and others to be lost. God did not choose any sinners to be lost. God died for the sins of tbe world (1 John 2:2 – And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world) so those who are lost are the ones who reject Jesus blood sacrifice and resurrection. What I quoted are teachings written in the Scriptures quoted above. Basically, Jesus pardoned all sinners by his blood sacrifice but most reject his gift. Ephesians 2:8 makes it clear that salvation does not come from the person or from works. It is undeserved favor to those the Father chose in eternity (again Ephesians 1:4). Man plays no role in his or her salvation – it is a gift of God.

I believe brethren, God’s peace made complete in all men through faith in Christ Jesus our Lord. It’s not by anyone’s works but only believe the Jesus Christ God transforming works begin and His brings this wonderful peace…
John 3:16–“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him”.

        • I agree totally that salvation is a gift of God completely paid for by the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, but to say that people have no role in their salvation –
They must answer the call of God to start
They must do the will of God to continue.
There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation although we must remain faithful to God and His Word. It is in the remaining faithful where most fail and allow the ‘sins’ of the world to creep back in so that even the ‘Elect’ become recaptured.

  2. Yet Matthew 10:34 states:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.”

    • Jaime Rodrigues.

You are right. But the peace that God gives us is peace in our hearts when we put our faith and trust in Him. That peace no one can take away from us even if the should is crumbling around us. It comes when we have faith and trust Him to lead our lives. Then, and only then, can we have the peace of God.

      • Barrie Beaumont

You are ‘spot on’ Jamie. Hebrews 11.

    • Dr. Derek P. Blake – The “sword” appears to mean strife, discord, conflict; deadly opposition between eternally hostile principles, that Christ the Word brought when he came to preach and save sinners; however, as we evidence our world is full of disbelief and and false teaching that pits even family members against one another. Many hate and persecute those who proclaim themselves as true Bible Christians. There is a price to pay when one follows the Bible and its teachings, just as Jesus encountered in his time. Matthew 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

  3. Vera sarpong

The whole world seek peace and that has been a drive for most of us if not all of us. We do all sorts of things to get peace but the only way is through our Lord Jesus Christ. It is abiding in him and hiding under his covering and trusting him like a child trust his parent. God is peace

    • Barrie Beaumont

Wonderful to know people who have reached this point Vera. It really is the way.

  4. Michelle

Peace is when, your husband has stage 4 cancer Dr’s say he has 4% chanse of survival yet you give it to God because He is the almighty and knows best, God in his power and wisdom empresses you to find natural medicine where chances of survival increase. Praise God, my husband is now cancer free and I have peace knowing He watches over us, and gives us wisdom in times of need. He imparts to us peace even in the mitts of the storm. John 16:33

  5. Peacemakers will have a prominent place in The Kingdom, making citizenship in the coming Kingdom a highly valued position. Jesus says they will be called “sons of God.” To Jesus’ Hebrew audiences, this phrase meant an immensely powerful human being — denoting a judge or ruler. In His original spoken language, Aramaic, it meant a son of a noble, and when translated into Greek, it brought into consideration the idea of being an heir to the property of The King.
